I am embarrassed to say that when I was growing up, nobody I knew had a pit bull and it was considered an insult to say that someone’s dog looked like there was some pit mixed in. My first experience with this incredible breed came through friends who adopted two pit mixes. I could not believe how loving and loyal these dogs were. I wanted to know if they were the exception to the rule so I started to research. Through my research I discovered that pit bulls are one of the most misunderstood breeds of all time and very deserving of any help we can give them. They have been subjected to breed specific legislation and outright discrimination because of irresponsible breeding and ownership. Forced to fight and shamefully abused, these dogs have been first designed and then banished by society. It is important that we recognize the challenges these dogs face and acknowledge that it is our responsibility to help them.
When my boyfriend and I decided we wanted to get our first dog we knew we had to adopt. I did a quick google search and came upon Pittie Love Rescue’s website! I fell in love with Dixie’s pictures immediately. I couldn’t understand how someone could look at her adorable, wrinkled face and think that this dog could ever be vicious. Since then I have been working hard to educate my friends and family and I am happy to say that many of them have come around and realized that there is no better dog than a safe, happy pit bull. We recently took in our first foster and it has been a very rewarding experience. To see a dog whose life has been so hard love so unconditionally just reaffirms my belief that these dogs are 100% worth saving. I love these dogs and I hope to keep helping them for a very long time.
